Curriculum

Our Curriculum  Decision making approach:

At St James Park Kindergarten, our curriculum is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF v2.0) and the Department for Education Literacy and Numeracy Indicators. These frameworks help us design learning experiences that build children’s confidence, curiosity, communication, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.

Inquiry-Led and Emergent Curriculum

We believe children learn best when their ideas, questions and interests shape the direction of the curriculum.

Our educators observe children’s play, conversations and strengths, and use these insights to develop an emergent curriculum. Learning experiences are intentionally planned while remaining flexible, allowing inquiry to grow naturally from what captures children’s attention.

Planning in 5-Week Cycles

We also plan in 5-week overview cycles for Literacy, Numeracy and Wellbeing  to ensure clarity, continuity, and intentionality across our terms.

Our planning documents show how we listen to and learn from children.
Each plan includes:

  • What we have been noticing in children’s play, ideas and interactions
  • Our teaching intentions and the skills or concepts we aim to strengthen
  • What you may see, hear or experience in the environment as these learning opportunities unfold

This helps families understand the “why” behind the experiences happening each day

Making Learning Visible

Making learning visible for children and families is a core part of our practice.
Educators use pedagogical documentation, photos, learning stories, group reflections and children’s work samples, to capture the learning that unfolds over time.

This documentation helps us to:

  • Understand, assess and evaluate each child’s learning journey
  • Plan for growth and next steps
  • Share learning with children and families in meaningful ways
  • Reflect as a team to strengthen our curriculum and practice
